EARTH SPEAK: Giving Voice to Paper

CONGRATULATIONS are in order for the 44 artists who were selected to be a part of the 2023-24 International Biennial of Paper Fibre Art (IBPFA) in Taiwan: https://ibpfa.org/selected-artist/

For more than a decade, the IBPFA has been evolving into an important new forum for contemporary paper art. Founded and organized by Jan Fairbairn-Edwards with the Association Chaîne de Papier (originally in France) the Biennial is the result of a unique partnership with the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI).

Building on the success of subsequent exhibitions, the NTCRI carries the event into the next phase with Fairbairn-Edwards’ blessings: “The biennial was inspired by the strong traditions from different cultures all over the world and our goal has always been to bring together the traditional and modern by pushing the medium to the forefront of modern art practice.”

Keeping to its commitment of illuminating the strong connections between paper art and nature, while also cultivating environmental themes, this year’s exhibition EARTH SPEAK: Giving Voice to Paper represents artists from 18 countries. Curator Amy Richard worked closely with co-jurors Jan Fairbairn-Edwards and Jen-Kuan Yau (with the NTCRI) and Taiwan artist Wei-Lin Yang. As Richard describes, the exhibition is a “celebration and grateful acknowledgement to paper as a powerful creative medium and the artists who choose to work with it. We are quite excited about the works, which individually and collectively provide us with a greater understanding of what is at stake at this moment in our own history as we experience much larger natural forces throughout the globe.”

Reflecting the excitement about the exhibition, the NTCRI has organized the work to be exhibited in two venues in Taiwan, beginning with the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in the capital city of Taipei, from November 2-12. Soon after it will be moved to the NTCRI Craft Design Hall within the Taiwan’s Craft Culture Park in Caotun Township, Nantou County where it will be on view until March 31, 2024.

Announcement of Selected Artists

The 2023/24 International Biennial for Paper Fibre Art (IBPFA) would like to thank all of the artists who submitted artwork for consideration for the forthcoming exhibition, EARTH SPEAK: Giving Voice to Paper. Works were reviewed and selected by four jurors with the support and assistance of a great team:

Jen-Kuan Yau / Co-Curator / Project Manager
Jan Fairbairn Edwards / Co-Curator
Wei-Lin Yang / Co-Curator
Amy Richard / Curator

Tien-Li Chen / Project Director / Director of NTCRI
Meng-Chii, Kiki, Huang / Project Coordinator
See-Min Cheong / Project Technical
Chia-Hua Shen / Project Technical
Ching-Fen Hsiao / Project Administrator

With nearly 200 submissions and hundreds of images to be reviewed, selection was not an easy task, especially with so many high quality submissions received. We understand the time and effort it takes to submit works for exhibitions like this and we thank everyone for their patience with the new online application process.

It was inspiring to see so many interesting and compelling ideas, processes and artworks. One thing is clear : there are many talented artists around the globe who share our passion for paper and are dedicated to giving voice to this extraordinary material. We look forward to seeing the work in our exhibition hall this autumn and meeting the artists.
